Odd Beholder is the electro-wave/indie pop project of Swiss musician Daniela Weinmann, through which she precisely and laconically chronicles the oddities, shadows, and misunderstandings of our time. Weinmann explores themes of alienation and escapism, emancipation, and the vision of a potentially better world. Her take on embracing, dark pop music grapples with uncomfortable truths while simultaneously offering comfort.
On the new concept album Honest Work, ten songs tell stories from the adult lives of working people in the middle and lower classes. They work night shifts at the hospital, pump breast milk in storage rooms, wonder whether they should get a prescription for Ritalin, get called into the boss’s office for wearing the wrong clothes, and skip work for a day to walk barefoot by a lake. It’s an album about people who try - and often fail - to find their way in systems that turn them into anonymous data points, employees, and consumers.
